Paintings

A rainbow divides the visible spectrum of light in pure examples of the color components. All the colors we see are just mixtures of these colors. If the colors of his palette are the same, all other colors can be mixed.

The difference between transparent and opaque colors

The oil painting is the result of mixing pigments with linseed oil. The natural pigments are powdered mineral and vegetable matter. The mineral pigments, such as cadmium and titanium, when mixed with oil colors are opaque. From natural pigments, (or Quinacridone Dioxazine), or vegetable matter, when mixed with linseed oil you will get transparent oil colors. The colors are useful for transparent glass. When a transparent color is mixed with an opaque color becomes opaque.

Palette

Put your paint on a palette

A palette is a non-porous surface where you can mix colors. The palette may be subject to the hand or placed on a surface like a table. The pallets have commonly a hole in order to handled it . The pallets are commonly made of wood or Plexiglas.

As an additional care for a palette of wood you could fund with linseed oil (very little) before its daily use. After the pallet has been cleared at the end of a session could repeat the process, to avoid deterioration of the wood

The plexiglass is a good surface as though the mixing palette of colors in a palette of white color makes it difficult to distinguish dark colors. would be advisable to have a color palette with a neutral palette ... wood may be the best choice, if you can get both notice the difference in the end if you want to paint for long time would not be a bad idea to have two or three pallets as any professional painter.
The hand in the palette of colors and ready for paint. The colors are sorted from the most clear to the most obscure in pairs because you have two tones of each color and you do it from left to right, so I would start with white, lemon yellow, cadmium yellow, cadmium red, carmine of Garanza, ceruleun blue, blue overseas , burnt sienna and black, if you want you can change the order but try to use the same order so over time they will know automatically part of the palette and would be more easy for you to locate the colors .

Blades

These are used to mix the colors. The blades come in many shapes, sizes and uses. These forms are well suited to the mixture of colors. You only need one to start. With his spatula can take portions of the colors you want to mix in a clean place in his palette. Then, using a spatula can mix colors thereafter to apply them with paint brushes. Try to clean the spatula to pick the colors.

The blades can also be used for painting, some painters use just a spatula not brushes.

Solvent

Mediun is a term used to describe the liquid that is mixed with the pigment. The one used by execelenc is the linseed oil, but not the most recommended because over time the oil is oxidized and became yellow, but is the most widely used by its elasticity, but depending your style of painting could use a mediun or simply dispense of them entirely.

What it is necessary to use the tementina in the first phase known as the stain, there is not another solvent that could best be used at this stage, in subsequent layers is used linseed oil or turpentine or any other solvent or you can decide to apply the oil direct from the tube.

The Canvas

It is the traditional surface for painting in oils. Although the oil painting can be used in most non-porous surfaces texture and flexibility of a stretched canvas is the best. Many areas of fabric are available including fabric texture of paper, canvas and a roll of pre-stretched canvases. In all cases, the surface should be prepared with Gesso.

Stretching your own canvas

If you need a special size canvas, or want to preape your own canvas can use cotton or linen that is the most recommended but the most expensive.

The cloth is stretched beginning of the central part to the ends to one side to the other oposite side, not quite tense one side and then switch to another if it does so in the end you have to started over, Use a gun staples to hold the fabric.

Later we moved on to the preparation of the canvas, Separates the Gesso in two parts to one part add 30% water, mix well and apply it with a bristle brush hair like as if they paint a wall, let dry one day, then Sand the surface with sanding paper and then apply the second hand with the second part of Gesso which applies to only 10% water, and this will be enough, if you wish, you can apply more layers, this depends on whether this fabric is thick or thin cloth or if you have lots of texture or not, if you want to paint feeling the texture of the canvas, or prefer a surface almost flat, there are many things to take into account, but this preparation serves almost all of them.

Ofcourse many people now choose to buy the canvas prepared, if you are starting to paint, we suggest that you use these canvas prepared but at least once try to prepare a canvas by yourself so you can see the difference.

The Gesso

The Gesso is made up of polymer emulsion and titanium dioxide. All areas intended for the oil painting will benefit from a base coat of Gesso.

To aplly the first Gesso layer the brush strokes should be in horizontal way and the next layer in vertical way . The Gesso can be thinned with water to reduce the texture of brush strokes. It takes about an hour to dry.

The Easel

An oil painting takes three days to dry, the function of the easel is to keep the painting in an upright position and faciliarte the process of painting, optional easels can be as simple as a nail in the wall that you can hang up on the canvas or a chair or a window.

You have a variety of easels in any local art store, choose the best suited to your space and the size of the paintings you are going to paint, to start a small easel is better, or even a chair may be the second best option, the important is that we do not stop the desire to paint because you dont have an easel.

Lighting your Studio

Locate a lighted area of natural light, ventilation: this is important because the oils could cause you some allergic reactions, and the smell of paint are very strong so try to search for the more and ventilated room, think you're going to be in that room probably more than three or four hours a day and you're going to store paintings in that spot.

Cleaning Materials

Clean as soon as you finish

The oil painting takes a long time to dry but once it has dried are difficult to remove. The best thing is to clean up when finished with turpentine, if you left the oil to dry so you are going to be forced to use solvents as strong as the thiner.
Their Brushes

the brushes should be cleaned after each session of painting. First wipe any excess paint it can be removed with a cloth, then soak the brush into turpentine, rubbing the brush at the bottom of the container to remove excess oil, remove the excess with a rag and then wash brushes with soap and water, make enough foam to remove the last paint residues, there are some especials soaps for this.

Your palette

The colors should not be allowed to dry in his palette. To clean your palette first remove much color as possible with his spatula. Then, clean your palette with a dry paper towel or cloth and then clean again a turpentine, you can separate the mixture of colors that have been using at the side of the palette for later use them for delaying the oils drying apply them some of linseed oil That will keep them fresh a bit more than usual.

your spatula

Just wipe your spatula with a rag it does not need anything else.

Protection of your paintings

The varnishs

There are two types of varnishes used in oil painting. This is the final varnish and retouching varnish

The retouching varnish is used during the course of painting. The final coating is used at the end of the painting.
The varnish retouching enables you to re-paint on without causing any problem can apply it as many times as you want and paint on without any problem.

The final varnish should be applied when the painting is fully completed,

Before applying the final varnish you should wait for the painting to dry at least three to six months, the variation of time depends on the oil quantities the painting has, while they are thicker layers of oil you should wait the more time, but if you have painted with thin layers of oil then three months might be a good time to apply the final varnish.

You can apply the varnish with a brush or spray.
